Backrooms (2026)

Hello, my name is Hugo Plugis. I am an eleven year old who you may remember from my M3GAN 2.0 review. I have recently watched Backrooms by upcoming young director Kane Parsons, and decided to write a review of it. Hope you enjoy.

The experience for me was really fun, though near the beginning I wasn’t sure what to expect. So I was pretty tense, but as the movie continued I knew I would enjoy it.

The beginning half of the movie explained a lot of things leading up to the main event of the story, but I prefer the second half. I liked the way Kane made the backrooms this bizarre, unknown yet familiar space of pure fear and evil. Not that the movie wasn’t scary in other ways, but the biggest horror factor was the lack of explanation for how this terrifying world came to be. A lot of people expected every piece of lore to be handed to them on a silver platter, but this movie isn’t supposed to be the first part of a trilogy. It's actually the 25th episode of Kane’s Backrooms found footage series that he has been making since 2022. It's like picking up the last book of a series and complaining that you don’t understand anything. And personally I really liked how not much was explained, because it gave me lots of room to think about theories.

I also wanted to address a couple expectations that some people (including myself) had before watching. If you are an enjoyer of Kane Parson’s original YouTube series, there are some differences. For example Kane switched the classic Bacteria entity for a new type of monster called Still Life, these creepy deformed copies of humans. Though I missed the old entities, these guys were pretty cool.

By the way, keep in mind that they actually made a 30,000 square foot replica for the set. And that the main entity is actually that tall.

Another expectation was that people thought the movie would be more of a classic jumpscare-fest type horror movie, rather than a psychological horror film. I didn’t really understand this one, because Backrooms being a slasher just wouldn't make any sense.

The character backstory could have been more extensively used. Not that the characters were bad, but they weren’t as intriguing as the entities or the Backrooms itself.

Though these expectations weren’t met, I still hope people can accept this movie as it is and encourage Kane to continue directing films.

If Kane does decide to expand on his Backrooms series, I hope instead of just making a direct sequel, he makes a prequel where he explains how Async Research Institute founded the Backrooms.

Anyway, even if other people don’t agree with me, I still love this movie. I have been a Backrooms fan for years and I’m glad this little indie world the internet has been building since 2019 has finally evolved. I hope the fact that Kane has come so far from being a teen on YouTube can inspire other young directors. 5 out of 5 sacs of blood.
