Heather Bowlan on “[interview with a vampire]”

Given that "the horrors" has become shorthand for our current reality, I've been wondering how to explore falling in love within that context. There's complexity and uncertainty and fear, wrapped up in fascination and hunger, all the ways that forming deep relationships can overwhelm and consume. Vampirism seemed like a good metaphor for that, and it gave me space to explore how two people in love are never separate from how they're perceived by/move through the world. And besides the obvious reference to the gift that Anne Rice has given pop culture, it felt appropriate to thread questioning, if not interrogation, into the structure of the poem.
